You would find Lovette Dobson, a name attached to more than 70,000 business filings nationwide, more than any other individual on record (Blum, 2025). The natural assumption is that someone signing that much paperwork must be running a scheme. The actual answer is more interesting, and more revealing about how business formation works in America: Dobson is a longtime employee of Bizee, formerly known as Incfile, one of the country&#8217;s largest online LLC formation services. The same stress response that fuels achievement, the push to optimize, lead, and provide, is implicated in the physiological wear that shortens healthspan. Chronic activation of the stress hormone cortisol is well established in the physiology literature as disruptive to immune function, sleep architecture, and systemic inflammation over time. The paradox is that the habits building a career can simultaneously erode the health needed to enjoy the results of it. Sirtuin activators and resveratrol, popularized in the mid-2000s and associated with Harvard researcher David Sinclair, generated enormous attention and a $720 million acquisition of the biotech firm Sirtris Pharmaceuticals by GlaxoSmithKline in 2008. Independent labs subsequently could not reproduce several of the original findings, the specific drug candidate was discontinued in 2010 over safety and efficacy concerns, and Sirtris was shut down in 2013, a case now cited in the field as a cautionary tale about the gap between preclinical hype and replicated results. More recent work from the same research program has also drawn published rebuttals disputing specific methodological claims.</p><p>None of this means longevity science as a field is unreliable. It means the specific, dramatic &#8220;reverse aging&#8221; claims that generate the most media attention deserve more scrutiny than the quieter, harder-to-market findings that have actually replicated. Psychological research on attitudes toward aging is a good example of the latter: a landmark study by Yale&#8217;s Becca Levy and colleagues, tracking 660 adults over 23 years, found that people with more positive self-perceptions of aging lived 7.5 years longer on average than those with more negative self-perceptions, a larger effect than the roughly four-year advantage associated with low blood pressure and cholesterol, and larger than the one-to-three-year advantages independently associated with normal body weight, not smoking, and regular exercise (Levy et al., 2002). That finding has held up, has been replicated in follow-up work by the same research group, and gets far less popular attention than any supplement stack.</p><h2>What the Evidence Actually Supports</h2><p>The building blocks of healthspan that have reasonably strong, converging support across nutrition and exercise physiology are unglamorous: adequate protein and nutrient density rather than restriction, resistance training alongside cardiovascular exercise, consistent sleep timing, and stress management practices that measurably lower chronic cortisol exposure. Mindset genuinely appears to matter through a documented, replicated psychological pathway (Levy et al., 2002), not as a vague motivational claim. The size of the healthspan-lifespan gap itself, and its link to chronic disease burden, is well established through large-scale, peer-reviewed epidemiological work (Garmany &amp; Terzic, 2025).</p><p>What remains genuinely unsettled is the more exotic tier of longevity intervention, specific supplements, sirtuin activators, and some cellular reprogramming approaches, where preclinical promise has repeatedly outpaced replicated human results. Readers should treat marketing claims in this tier with real skepticism until independent replication catches up, which, based on the field&#8217;s track record, is not guaranteed to happen on the timeline the marketing suggests.</p><h2>The Larger Pattern</h2><p>The professionals most likely to reach their later decades with strength and clarity are not the ones chasing the newest longevity headline. They are the ones treating the well-replicated basics, resistance training, sleep, stress regulation, and a genuinely positive orientation toward aging itself, as a long-term design problem rather than a crisis to manage later. The real opportunity in longevity science right now is not a miracle compound. Breach Report found that the global average cost of a data breach fell to $4.44 million, down 9 percent from $4.88 million the year before, the first decline in five years. The reported driver was not less crime; it was faster containment. Organizations using AI-powered defenses extensively cut their breach lifecycle by 80 days and saved close to $1.9 million on average compared with those that did not, and the mean time to identify and contain a breach dropped to 241 days, the lowest in nine years (IBM, 2025).</p><p>That global figure hides a sharp regional divergence. In the United States specifically, the average cost of a data breach hit a record $10.22 million in 2025, up 9 percent year over year (IBM, 2025). AI is cutting costs on average worldwide while a country with some of the most valuable data and most attractive targets is seeing the opposite. Both facts are true at once, and neither cancels the other out.</p><h2>The Common Misunderstanding</h2><p>The instinctive read on &#8220;AI and cybersecurity&#8221; is that generative AI is primarily a weapon in the attacker&#8217;s hands, making phishing more convincing and attacks more scalable. That is true, but it is no longer the dominant worry inside the security profession, and the shift is recent enough to be genuinely surprising.</p><p>The World Economic Forum&#8217;s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026, based on a survey of security leaders worldwide, found that concern about data leaks linked to organizations&#8217; own generative AI tools (34 percent) has overtaken concern about adversaries&#8217; AI capabilities (29 percent) for the first time. In 2025, the ranking was reversed and far more lopsided: 47 percent worried primarily about adversarial AI capability, versus just 22 percent worried about GenAI data leaks (World Economic Forum, 2026). In one year, the center of gravity in AI risk perception moved from &#8220;what attackers might do to us&#8221; to &#8220;what our own employees might accidentally leak through a chatbot.&#8221; Ninety-four percent of respondents now call AI the single most significant driver of cybersecurity change heading into 2026 (World Economic Forum, 2026), but the reason has shifted from offense to internal governance.</p><h2>Where AI Is Genuinely Making Attacks Worse</h2><p>None of this means the offensive threat is overstated, it is simply more specific than &#8220;AI-powered attacks in general.&#8221; The clearest evidence is in voice and identity fraud. Pindrop recorded a rise of more than 1,300 percent in deepfake fraud attempts across contact centers in 2024, and deepfake vishing (voice phishing) attacks surged roughly 1,600 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared with the last quarter of 2024 in the United States. Deepfake voice impersonation attempts reportedly targeted around 37 percent of large enterprises in 2025. Detection has not kept pace: independent testing puts human accuracy at identifying AI-generated audio, video, and images at only about 53.7 percent, barely better than a coin flip, and the share of cybersecurity professionals who say they feel least prepared for deepfake attacks specifically rose from 3 percent in 2024 to 21 percent in 2025. Projections for generative-AI-enabled fraud losses in the United States alone range from $12.3 billion to $40 billion between 2024 and 2027.</p><p>This is a narrower and more actionable threat than &#8220;AI attacks are rising.&#8221; It points specifically at voice and video verification as a weak point that most organizations built their identity processes around before synthetic media was convincing enough to defeat them.</p><h2>The Unglamorous Risk That&#8217;s Actually Bigger</h2><p>While deepfakes generate headlines, the more structurally significant threat remains less exciting: third parties. Verizon&#8217;s 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report, covering incidents from November 2024 through October 2025, found that breaches involving a third party jumped 60 percent year over year and now account for 48 percent of all confirmed breaches, nearly half. Remediation lags badly behind the risk: only 23 percent of third-party organizations had fully resolved multi-factor authentication issues on their cloud accounts, and fixing permission misconfigurations and weak vendor passwords typically takes about eight months (Verizon, 2026). This is not a forecast or a prediction anymore. It is a measured, current majority-adjacent share of the breaches that already happened.</p><h2>The Response: Spending Is Following the Threat, Roughly</h2><p>Security budgets are moving in response, though not always at the pace the threat data would justify. Gartner projects worldwide information security spending will reach $244.2 billion in 2026, up 13.3 percent, with security software as the fastest-growing segment amid rising adoption of AI-amplified security tools, projected to be used by more than 75 percent of enterprises by 2028, up from under 25 percent in 2025 (Gartner, as cited in Columbus, 2026). Geopolitics is now the top factor shaping cyber risk strategy for 64 percent of organizations, reflecting how state-linked threats have merged with criminal ones in most security planning (World Economic Forum, 2026).</p><h2>What Remains Uncertain</h2><p>Whether the 2025 global cost decline holds or was a one-year artifact of early AI-defense adoption is not yet established; IBM&#8217;s own report frames rapid AI adoption without governance as creating new vulnerabilities that could offset today&#8217;s gains. It is also unclear whether the WEF&#8217;s finding, that internal GenAI data leaks now worry security leaders more than external adversarial AI, reflects a genuine shift in relative risk or simply reflects which risk feels newer and less familiar to survey respondents. Both are reasonable readings, and the data available cannot fully adjudicate between them yet.</p><h2>The Larger Pattern</h2><p>The honest 2026 cybersecurity story is not &#8220;AI is making everything worse&#8221; or &#8220;defenses are winning.&#8221; It is that AI has become dual-use at a scale that makes single-number headlines misleading. The same technology cutting global containment times and saving money on average is enabling deepfake fraud that most organizations cannot reliably detect. The same organizations racing to deploy generative AI defensively are now more worried about their own tools leaking data than about attackers weaponizing AI against them. And the biggest measured driver of breaches, third-party and vendor risk, has nothing to do with generative AI at all; it is a decades-old supply-chain problem that has simply gotten worse on its own timeline. When two tasks compete for that same bandwidth, the brain does not truly multitask. The brain is not lazy in these moments. It is selective, and its efficiency depends on clarity rather than volume.</p><h2>Attention Residue: The Hidden Drain</h2><p>One of the more counterintuitive findings in this field is what organizational researcher Sophie Leroy termed <span data-color="#920000" style="color: rgb(146, 0, 0);">attention residue</span> (Leroy, 2009). When a person switches from one task to another, say from writing a report to checking an email, part of their attention stays behind, still processing the prior activity even as the next one begins. That residue reduces the cognitive capacity available for the new task, which is why people cannot instantly refocus after an interruption.</p><h2>The Common Misunderstanding: The &#8220;23 Minutes&#8221; Myth</h2><p>No statistic gets repeated more often in productivity writing than the claim that it takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully refocus after an interruption. It is worth being precise about where that number actually comes from, because the popular version overstates the science.</p><p>The figure originates from a 2006 Gallup interview with researcher Gloria Mark, not from a peer-reviewed, published finding with that exact figure attached. The peer-reviewed study most often cited alongside it, Mark, Gudith, and Klocke&#8217;s 2008 CHI paper on the cost of interrupted work, found something more specific and less dramatic: 81.9 percent of interrupted tasks were resumed the same day, and people typically completed roughly two other intervening tasks before returning to the original one (Mark et al., 2008). The 23-minute figure describes average resumption time in that same body of research, not a fixed universal recovery period, and it has since taken on a life far beyond what the underlying data supports.</p><p>This matters for a simple reason: the exaggerated version of the statistic gets used to justify sweeping claims about lost productivity that the original research never made. The real finding, that interruptions delay and fragment task resumption in a measurable, costly way, is still true and still important. It just does not require an urban legend to make the case.</p><h2>The Dopamine Trap</h2><p>If multitasking makes performance worse, why does the behavior persist? Part of the answer lies in the brain&#8217;s reward system. Task switching, checking a notification, glancing at a new message, opening another tab, triggers small releases of dopamine tied to novelty rather than progress (Bunzeck &amp; D&#252;zel, 2006; Wittmann et al., 2007). That reward loop favors stimulation over completion, conditioning people toward shallow engagement rather than the sustained focus that produces meaningful work.</p><h2>What the Evidence Actually Supports</h2><p>Media multitasking research offers some of the clearest evidence available. Ophir, Nass, and Wagner (2009) found that people who frequently multitask across media perform worse on tests of attention, memory, and task switching than lighter multitaskers, contrary to the assumption that habitual multitasking builds skill at it. Decision-making also degrades under repeated switching: Adler and Benbunan-Fich (2012) documented declines in both speed and accuracy as task-switching frequency increased, and Mark, Gudith, and Klocke (2008) linked frequent interruption to elevated time pressure and stress. Creativity suffers as well, since it depends on uninterrupted cognitive incubation that fragmented attention disrupts (Sio &amp; Ormerod, 2009).</p><p>More recent work confirms the pattern is not just an artifact of early-2000s office culture. A 2024 review in Annals of Medicine &amp; Surgery found that chronic digital multitasking, now driven primarily by smartphones and app-switching rather than desktop windows, is associated with reduced executive function, diminished working memory, and elevated mental fatigue, extending the older experimental findings into the smartphone era (Hasan, 2024).</p><p>What remains less settled is how much of this effect is reversible, and how quickly. Mrazek and colleagues (2013) found that two weeks of mindfulness-based single-tasking training improved accuracy, working memory, and emotional regulation in a controlled study, but two weeks in a lab setting is not the same as sustained behavior change in a notification-saturated workplace. The precise dose of focused practice required to durably rebuild attention outside a research setting is not yet well established.</p><h2>The Larger Pattern</h2><p>The culture of multitasking persists because it mimics the sensation of progress. Ticking boxes, answering pings, and juggling windows feel like accomplishment even when they degrade it. Meanwhile, deep, sustained focus, what Cal Newport calls deep work, is becoming scarcer precisely because the environment is engineered against it (Newport, 2016). That scarcity is what makes it valuable: the fewer people who can sustain real attention, the more it is worth in any field that rewards judgment over volume.</p><p>None of this argues for rigidity. It argues for honesty about what the brain can actually do at once, and for treating focus as a skill built through practice rather than a fixed trait. is treating it as pure software, something that exists abstractly in the cloud with no physical footprint. In reality, advanced AI systems require enormous physical resources: compute infrastructure, semiconductor fabrication, hyperscale data centers, energy generation, cooling systems, and rare earth supply chains form the material foundation beneath every frontier model. This is not a minor technical detail. It is the reason AI infrastructure is now a geopolitical asset in the same category as oil reserves or naval dominance, and it is why the actual numbers behind this buildout are worth taking seriously.</p><h2>The Physical Scale of the Buildout</h2><p>The dollar figures involved are no longer abstract. The four largest US hyperscalers, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet, are projected to spend between roughly $630 billion and $725 billion combined on capital expenditures in 2026, up sharply from an already record $388 to $410 billion in 2025 (Futurum Group; Tom&#8217;s Hardware, 2026). The large majority of that spending goes toward AI data centers, specialized chips, and the power infrastructure needed to run them.</p><p>Energy is where this physical dependency becomes most concrete. The International Energy Agency found that global data center electricity demand grew 17 percent in 2025, with electricity consumption specifically from AI-focused data centers surging 50 percent that same year. Data centers overall consumed roughly 415 terawatt hours in 2024, about 1.5 percent of global electricity, and the IEA projects that figure will roughly double to around 950 terawatt hours by 2030, close to 3 percent of global demand, with AI-specific consumption growing fastest of all (International Energy Agency, 2026). Training and operating frontier models is, in a very literal sense, an energy policy question now, not just a computing one.</p><h2>Why Semiconductor Concentration Is a Strategic Vulnerability</h2><p>Semiconductor manufacturing illustrates the concentration risk clearly. Advanced AI systems depend on specialized chips built for high-performance parallel processing, and a strikingly small number of companies dominate that supply chain. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company alone controls roughly 72 percent of the global pure-foundry market, with its nearest competitor, Samsung, holding only about 7 percent, and Taiwan is responsible for producing something like 90 percent of the world&#8217;s most advanced chips (TSMC quarterly filings, 2026). A disruption to that supply chain, whether from natural disaster, geopolitical conflict, or export policy, would not simply raise prices. It would constrain the physical capacity for AI development worldwide almost overnight.</p><p>This is precisely why governments increasingly treat semiconductor policy as a national security matter rather than a purely economic one. Export controls, domestic manufacturing incentives, and industrial policy around AI hardware reflect a recognition that compute capacity has become a strategic asset in its own right.</p><h2>The Rise of Sovereign AI</h2><p>Governments are responding to this concentration risk with a wave of what is now commonly called sovereign AI investment, building domestic compute, chip, and model capacity specifically to reduce dependence on foreign providers. France has committed roughly &#8364;109 billion toward domestic AI infrastructure, including a Fluidstack-backed supercomputer project intended to host 500,000 next-generation chips, and the broader European Union has launched a &#8364;20 billion AI gigafactory initiative to fund large-scale compute facilities across the bloc (raiseSUMMIT; McKinsey, 2026). India&#8217;s IndiaAI Mission had deployed roughly 34,000 subsidized GPUs to startups, researchers, and government agencies by mid-2026, with a stated target of 100,000 public GPUs by year&#8217;s end. Gulf states, led by the UAE&#8217;s G42 and Saudi Arabia&#8217;s HUMAIN, have announced combined AI infrastructure commitments exceeding $100 billion. The global sovereign AI market itself is estimated at roughly $40 billion in 2025, projected to grow toward $148 billion by 2032 (MarketsandMarkets, 2026). None of this is hypothetical policy discussion. It is capital already being deployed at a national scale.</p><h2>Concentration, Cybersecurity, and Systemic Risk</h2><p>The concentration of AI capability within a small number of firms raises a related governance concern distinct from semiconductor supply. A handful of corporations currently control substantial portions of the world&#8217;s cloud infrastructure, advanced AI research, and foundational models, creating a level of infrastructural centralization in private hands that influences economic activity, communications, and information access well beyond what any single regulator currently oversees. Disruptions affecting a major cloud provider or foundational model platform could cascade across multiple industries simultaneously, which makes that concentration simultaneously an efficiency advantage and a resilience liability.</p><p>Cybersecurity reinforces AI&#8217;s status as critical infrastructure in a similar way. As AI systems integrate into essential services, they become attractive targets for espionage, sabotage, and disruption, and an attack on AI infrastructure specifically may not simply compromise data. It may degrade the operational decision-making that increasingly depends on these systems. AI systems can also amplify vulnerability internally, through automation errors, biased outputs, model manipulation, or simply opaque decision-making that is hard to audit under pressure.</p><h2>What This Means for Sovereignty and Governance</h2><p>Historically, nations sought energy independence, military independence, and industrial independence to reduce strategic vulnerability. Sovereign AI investment reflects the same logic applied to a new domain: a recognition that dependence on foreign-controlled AI infrastructure could create long-term strategic exposure comparable to energy dependence in earlier eras.</p><p>At a societal level, this raises questions that go beyond infrastructure economics. Electrical grids transformed industrial society. Telecommunications reshaped social interaction. The internet reorganized information access. AI is positioned to alter how individuals work, communicate, and make decisions by increasingly mediating all three. As dependence deepens, the line between tool and infrastructure erodes. Infrastructure, in the end, is defined less by whether it is physical and more by whether society can function without it. Once that threshold is crossed, a system becomes infrastructural regardless of whether it is made of steel, electricity, or code.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Governance has not caught up to this reality. AI policy discussion still often focuses narrowly on content moderation and consumer applications, while underestimating the broader strategic implications of a physical, energy-intensive, geographically concentrated infrastructure layer that a small number of companies and countries now substantially control. The question is no longer simply whether AI can improve productivity.
