The Future of Resilience, Healthspan, and Mental Toughness

The wellness industry's most quoted market-size figure is real but understates the picture by more than 3x. The comprehensive number is $6.8T, larger than global tourism, IT, or sports combined.

Health and human performance are evolving as science, technology, and shifting consumer values reshape what it means to be well. For W3 readers, wellness is less about hitting the gym and more about building resilience and optimizing healthspan, the number of genuinely vibrant years, to thrive in demanding environments.

The scale of that shift is easy to understate. A frequently cited figure puts the wellness market at roughly $2 trillion, growing about 10 percent a year, and that number is accurate as far as it goes; it traces to Shopify’s 2025 wellness trends analysis of the ecommerce-facing wellness product market specifically. The more comprehensive figure, from the Global Wellness Institute’s full economic accounting across 145 countries, puts the total global wellness economy at $6.8 trillion as of 2024, projected to reach $7.4 trillion in 2025 and nearly $9.8 trillion by 2029, a sector now larger than global tourism, IT, or sports (Global Wellness Institute, 2025). Consumer appetite for wellness has grown alongside it: 84 percent of US consumers now rate wellness as a top or important life priority, up from 82 percent the year before (Shopify, 2025).
